Summer solstice 2024, temperatures still rising in Calabria

Lamezia Terme – Summer has officially arrived. Today is the summer solstice, in fact June 20th is the longest day of the year, lasting 15 hours and 15 minutes. This is, in fact, the moment in which the Sun, during its apparent motion in the celestial vault, reaches its northernmost position, and then begins its slow descent again: on this day, our star remains above for the maximum number of hours the horizon, while the night has the shortest duration of the year. A start to the summer which in Calabria started several weeks early with temperatures and heat increasing especially in the last few days reaching peaks of 40 degrees.

The solstice is delayed every year by almost 6 hours compared to the previous one and is forcibly realigned every four years, as happened in 2024, corresponding to the leap years, introduced precisely to avoid the progressive divergence of the seasons with the calendar. Due to these variations, the summer solstice may fall on June 20th or 21st. Since this year the phenomenon occurs at 10.51pm, in 2025 the addition of the 6 hours delay will push it back to June 21st.
