“Focus on the Cathedral: from the Normans to the present day interventions and reconstructions of the great factory, symbol of the city”, is the theme of the conference sponsored by the Municipality of Messina which will be held tomorrow, Friday 21 June, at 4 pm, in the Flag Hall at Palazzo Zanca, organized by Forum per Messina – online for the city, chaired by Elena La Spada, a network of service clubs and associations, united for the rediscovery, promotion and development of the city, which finds interlocutors for the overall redevelopment and valorisation project in the competent local institutions and bodies.
The meeting intends to analyze the history and role of the Monument through the centuries, and the historical-artistic heritage received today through dynamics that testify to the exceptional symbolic, religious-cultural value of the Basilica, which survived the disastrous events of the city, in the current , still suggestive, configuration.
The program of works will start with the institutional greetings of the mayor Federico Basile, followed by the interventions of Caterina Di Giacomo, art historian, former director of the Regional Museum of Messina on The “millennial” Cathedral of Messina between additions, disasters and reconstructions. Ancient subsistence in the current context; Grazia Musolino, art historian, former director of the Historical and Artistic Heritage Unit of the Superintendency of Messina, will discuss The mosaics of the Messina Cathedral and the restoration of the Theotòkos; Giusi Larinà, art historian, official of the Regional Museum of Messina on The Treasure of the Opera del Duomo of Messina. Some valuable sacred artefacts; and Gioacchino Gazzara, head of the Treasure Museum and the Bell Tower of the Cathedral of Messina, will discuss The astronomical clock of the Messina Cathedral.
