Episcopo locks down the council and the socialists desert the session

The Socialist Party boycotted today’s session of the City Councilthus demonstrating discontent with the failure of the broad progressive camp to accept their requests.

The Protest of the Socialist Councillors

The group leader Mino Di Chiara and the councilor Stefania Rignanese left the room immediately after the roll call. This gesture underlines the disappointment at the failure to assign a department to the PSI and the absence of representation on the boards of directors of the former municipal companies.

Division of Offices

The PSI’s decision implies that the distribution of positions has already been carried out, despite the fact that the policy act, which provides for both the harmonization of the regulations for the control of investee companies and the expansion of the Board of Directors from 3 to 5 members, has not been yet been approved.

Claim for Fair Representation

The PSI had requested a rebalancing of representation in the Council between the political forces of the centre-left coalition, without asking for verification. However, the council, present in full alongside the mayor Maria Aida Episcopo, was not reorganised. Although the PSI has the same number of councilors as Action, which has two councilors (Daniela Patano and Lorenzo Frattarolo), there have been no changes.

Possible Consequences of Changes

There is concern that any changes to the current political arrangements could lead other political forces to make further demands. This fear led to the rejection of the proposal to include Carmela Russo in the council.

Exclusion from the Board of Directors

The socialists, who had asked for recognition of the group in the Board of Directors, were completely excluded. Some members of the majority did not appreciate that the negotiations on the subsidiaries also reopened the question of the composition of the Council, creating unwanted tensions.

Internal Reactions to Action

In Action, the case of the presidency of two Commissions assigned to Mino Di Chiara, a role that should have gone to Antonello Di Paola, is considered resolved, given that Di Paola did not claim the position after moving to his colleague’s new group.

Need for Resolution

The signal of discontent sent by the socialists cannot be ignored. To regain their support, the broad progressive camp should offer a seat on the boards. Between Amgas, AmService, Ataf and Amiu, if the boards were to have five members, there would be 17 positions available. The mayor guaranteed that, if the costs remain unchanged (“I will not compromise on this”, she stated in the chamber), the positions will be carried out almost free of charge, despite all the associated responsibilities.
