Two golds, one silver, one bronze: it’s still Italy-show at the European fencing championships in Basel. On the second day of competitions on the continental platforms in Switzerland, the Olympic standard-bearer Arianna Errigo wins the foil title for the third time in her career, 7 years after the last time in Tbilisi 2017.

But it is the men’s saber that does something even more historic with a sensational hat-trick with the triumph of Michele Gallo, in an unprecedented all-blue final with Luca Curatoli, silver and Gigi Samele bronze. Thus the European individual saber title returned to Italy 19 years after Aldo Montano’s success at Zalaegerszeg 2005: Gallo, a 23-year-old from Salerno of the Carabinieri, won it, on a special day also for Curatoli, a Neapolitan of the Fiamme Oro and for the third time on the continental podium, and for captain Samele.

Tomorrow on the platforms of the St. Jacobs Halle the third day of the European Championships Basel 2024 will feature the individual competitions in men’s epee and women’s sabre. For Italy the four swordsmen on the platform will be Gabriele Cimini, Davide Di Veroli, Andrea Santarelli and Federico Vismara. In the women’s sabre, however, it will be the turn of the Italians Michela Battiston, Martina Criscio, Chiara Mormile and Irene Vecchi.
