Maturity starts for over 32 thousand Piedmontese, trail forecasts belied

TURIN. There are 32 thousand Piedmontese children, 18 thousand in Turin alone, who this morning will face one of the first important watersheds in their growth path, the final exam. «After a night of tears and prayers», as Antonello Venditti sings in the hymn that best describes the emotions preceding the exam, we begin, as tradition dictates, with the Italian subject, the only test common to all study areas: start at 8.30 and six hours available. There will be seven tracks in total and, as announced yesterday rather cryptically by the Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara, “they could be defined as interesting”.

The “toto theme” included the anniversary of the assassination of Giacomo Matteotti, the birth 150 years ago of Guglielmo Marconi and that 120 years ago of Robert Oppenheimer, considered the “father” of the atomic bomb. Ungaretti and Pirandello left.

The second test, scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 20 June, will change depending on the subjects. In the new professional institutes, the test focuses on skills and fundamental thematic cores of direction and not on disciplines. In classical high school the second test is a version of Greek; to the scientific student the much feared mathematics test.

Organizational problems due to last-minute cancellations by principals and teachers have also been resolved: the regional school office for Piedmont had to replace 31 commission presidents and 249 external commissioners drawing from the “bench” made up of those teachers who retired no more than 3 years ago and who applied as commissioners or presidents of commission. Compared to what happened in other regions, such as Lazio, where the use of retired staff reached 15%, in Piedmont it stopped at 7% among presidents and less than 1% among external commissioners.

“It will be a moment that you will remember all your life and that I too have remembered all my life: I remember the fear, the tension but also the great satisfaction of having completed a fundamental step in life” said the governor, Alberto Cirio, in the video message of best wishes to the students. The President of the Region will experience his 2024 graduation as a father: his son Emanuele, in fact, is also expected from the first test.

Best wishes to the Piedmontese students also came from the regional councilor for Education, Elena Chiorino: «I encourage you to give the best of yourselves, to believe in your potential and not to let difficulties discourage you: be curious, be tenacious» said Chiorino, evoking an iconic speech by Apple founder Steve Jobs.
