Prato, 19 June 2024 – Two more violent attacks in the Dogaia prison. The unions Sappe Sinappe Uil and Uspp Cgil are reporting them. Two officers were injured and ended up in the city emergency room with a 7-day prognosis for both. The two attacks occurred inside the medium security department by inmates of North African origin who “roam around undisturbed because they were placed in open regime sections”, underline the unions.
«In one case, the cowardly attacks saw a prisoner grab a prison police officer by the neck, without any reason, in an attempt to strangle him – we read in a note from the same unions – Only the intervention of other officers who arrived on site, were recalled from the activation of the emergency sound alarm, he avoided much more dramatic epilogues.” The other attack was against one of the department managers, guilty of opposing an inmate who attempted to leave without reason.
«These episodes denote a situation that is now out of control which we have been reporting for months – add the unions – An institute like the first upper management level in Prato has been abandoned to itself, left without a stable commander and with a non-definitive acting director. We are all exhausted and now devoid of all hope and motivation. The last visit of the undersecretary for justice had given some hope with at least the definitive assignment of a new commander, but apparently, perhaps informed of the difficult situation existing in Prato, he seems to have decided not to arrive. Ours is a cry for help addressed to all institutions.”
