He escapes from Ukraine and takes the final exam in Umbria: «My dream? Italian restaurant”

He faced the Italian test by arguing about silence: «I said that for me it is fundamental, on the one hand to know how to listen well, on the other because the distance from loved ones and the memory of times gone by require you to familiarize yourself with this dimension». David Movsisian is only 18 years old, but his daily life is a continuous test of maturity.

«I live here, in Spoleto, only with my grandmother. She works 24 hours as a carer, so I have the responsibility of taking care of the house, doing the washing machine, cooking, taking care of other chores and then studying all day. I try to learn Italian better and better, but I also study French, German and English which are also my next exams in the next few days. I’m confident that everything will be fine. I have a dream to realize”

What the dream is, David explains it like this: «I love Italian cuisine, lasagna drives me crazy, I really like risotto and meat as it is cooked here and I love pizza. I like wine but I don’t drink because I play sports. I did dance for ten years and then athletics, now I continue to train. I would like to open a restaurant in Italy, specialize in Italian cuisine and then open an Italian restaurant in Ukraine. But I proceed in order, first I want to graduate, then I will enroll at the University for Foreigners in Perugia. In reality I would also like to do something else, but I think it will be impossible for me.

What is it about? «I would really like to get a driving license after graduation. For me and my grandmother it would mean a very important, I would say fundamental, help. But there’s a lot of bureaucracy, I’m just a student, I don’t have residency and so I have to give it up. If I could really ask for help, I would really like someone to help me get a driving license, I’m ready to study even more for that too”

Now the other final exams await him, «the ones I fear the most are German and French, but I study a lot and I will try to do it. I can’t afford to be afraid of difficulties, I’m Ukrainian.” David tries to explain what this means for him: «I’m lucky not to have family members or friends killed, like many Ukrainians. My remaining friends managed to return to university. When I get in touch with my family or friends I talk non-stop. However, when I find myself alone, silence takes over. I don’t know when this war will end, I know that Europe can give great help, in terms of moral support but also by supporting our army with weapons. I would like to let everyone know that my people are kind, who welcome strangers with love and generosity”
