At the end of March Istat published the most updated data on demographic indicators in Italy. Among these is “life expectancy at birth”, also called “life expectancy”, which indicate «the average number of years that a person can expect to live from birth in the hypothesis in which, during their existence, they were subjected to the age-related mortality risks that characterized the year of observation».
According to Istat, in 2023 the life expectancy of men in Italy it was even at 81.1 years, while that of women at 85.2 years. As the graph shows, life expectancy has steadily increased over the last fifty years, with rare exceptions. The most notable is that of 2020, where the Covid-19 pandemic caused life expectancy in Italy to drop. In 2023, the indicator for men has returned to pre-pandemic levels, while that for women still remains slightly lower.
