The inauguration of the new basketball court in Udine.

The municipal administration of Udine has concluded the redevelopment of the sports area located in via del Bon, in the eastern district of the city. The intervention led to the creation of a new basketball and basketball court, confirming the commitment of theadministration in improving the quality of life of residents and, in particular, young people.

“We are very proud as an administration to inaugurate the first public outdoor basketball court built in the municipality of Udine and one of the very first in Italy” says Ivano Marchiol, Councilor for Public Works of the Municipality of Udine. “For those who don’t know yet, the term “baskin” is the union of the words `basketball’ and `inclusive’, a basketball specialty that brings together people with and without motor or cognitive limitations as a team. This sport originates from basketball and maintains its purpose, which is to score more baskets than the opposing team. The first field of this kind was created in Tavagnacco by Zio Pino Baskin Udine ASD, which has just won the title of Italian Champions.

A truly inclusive park.

The Salgari area project saw an overall redevelopment of the existing and the creation of a real “inclusive park” open to the use of multiple users, for green spaces that encourage aggregation and sociality”. In fact, the accesses and furnishings are fully inclusive and encourage aggregation, from the driveway without architectural barriers to the benches with recycled plastic seats which, thanks to a positioned overhang along a short side, they allow those in wheelchairs to easily sit at the table.

“We have several interventions like this planned – assures Sports Councilor Chiara Dazzan –. We started from this area because it is one of the most used by the population, so much so that many have turned to the technical offices to find out the construction times. I thank the municipal employees who were able to work in an optimal manner to return to the citizens an area that was certainly more beautiful and usable. My hope is that it will remain so for a long time and for this reason I appeal to everyone’s civic sense. Sport conveys positive and educational messages when both people that the spaces respond to this prerogative, that is, when people help to build meaningful relationships on an educational level – and baskin is certainly an excellent context – and spaces offer possibilities for everyone. In this case we achieved the objective.” The two associations that promote baskin in the area, Zio Pino Baskin and UBC Baskin, also participated in the event.

The project.

The project, with a total investment of 80 thousand euros, of which 40 thousand financed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, has transformed the existing equipped area in an inclusive and modern space. The construction of the basketball court included the removal of the old systems, the milling and resurfacing of the asphalt surface, and the application of a new resin coating, guaranteeing an optimal and already widely used playing surface.

Furthermore, they were installed new regulation basketball facilities and specific basketball facilities, equipped with double baskets at various heights (110 cm and 220 cm) to encourage accessibility and participation for all. The paving of the access driveway has been widened and improved, ensuring smooth traffic and no architectural barriers. The redevelopment of the sports area is a further step towards improving infrastructure in city neighborhoods, with the aim of creating safe and inclusive meeting spaces.
