Chiara Jacumin, a young woman from Monfalcone, recently achieved an extraordinary goal: she became the first person with Down syndrome to earn a master’s degree from the University of Padua. His proclamation, which took place on 17 June 2024, is an event that not only celebrates his commitment and determination, but also represents an important step forward towards a more inclusive society.

Chiara began her academic journey in 2018, when he obtained his three-year degree in Educational Sciences. Even then, his success made the news, as he was the first person with Down syndrome to graduate among the residents of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Despite the challenges imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Chiara persevered, enrolling in the master’s degree course in Cultures, education and global society at the Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Applied Psychology of the University of Padua.

Chiara’s thesis, entitled “Distance learning in schools of all levels between challenges, obstacles and opportunities. My personal reflection on the scholastic inclusion of pupils with disabilities during the Covid – 19 pandemic”, was discussed below the supervision of the teacher of General Education Alessandra Cavallo. With a score of 102, Chiara demonstrated not only her academic competence, but also her deep understanding problems related to school inclusion.
