MESSINA – A symbol of the decadence of Messina. One of many. On Viale della Libertà, the former Standa building will have a “new life”. The green light for the restructuring project of the “Lidl” brand was given in black and white by the Municipality’s Territorial and Urban Services Department. A “building renovation project with almost complete demolition, except for the foundations and the perimeter wall on the west side. And with the reconstruction of a building for commercial use Lidl Ltd.”.
The former Standa is one of the many symbols of a Messina to be rebuilt
If the area of the former Docker’s House and former Department Store is Messina’s “business card” when arriving by hydrofoil, now at the center of works for the I-ub, the former Standa is immediately noticeable when crossing the ferry from the Charon. And you can immediately see the degradation and dirt of a dilapidated structure. And tragic episodes also come to mind: on 5 January 2017 the death of a homeless Romanian, with the arrest of a compatriot for murder, and on 7 July 2018 the body of a 33-year-old Polish man was found there.
The former Standa is therefore one of the many symbols of a Messina to be rebuilt. A kind of Way of the cross of decadence is easy in this city. And the possibility of recovering or redoing imposing structures like this is an important signal.
