PESARO He said that they had promised him 20 thousand euros to be a “postman”. That is, going to Pesaro to get an envelope full of money and jewels and bring them home: but they didn’t believe him and the police immediately suspected fraud.

The facts

The story is that of a 22-year-old originally from Naples who from the Vele di Scampia district had arrived in the capital city of culture to pull off the fake accident scam, deceiving an 85-year-old from Pesaro. The young man was arrested in Rimini last April after he had reached the Romagna city by taxi. Yesterday the sentence.

The bait call

The scammer had called the victim by telephone pretending to be a police officer. During the phone call, the elderly man was informed that a family member, his son, had caused an accident and that it was necessary to pay bail to avoid legal consequences. Under this false premise, the elderly man was convinced to hand over cash and some gold jewelry. The 22-year-old, immediately after having collected the money and the valuables, around 2500 euros plus the gold jewellery, left Pesaro using a taxi to head towards Rimini. Here he had to get on another vehicle to return to Campania. But he didn’t know that he had already ended up on the radar of the Pesaro flying squad. Thus his escape was interrupted by the Traffic Police, alerted by the Pesaro police headquarters. Arrested, the young man declared in court that he had been hired by two individuals in Naples to collect an envelope from the elderly man’s house. The latter had organized his trip to Pesaro and return to Naples, promising him a compensation of 20,000 euros for the work done. The investigators’ suspicion is that what the 22-year-old defended himself with is a half-truth and that in short he has accomplices. The hypothesis is in fact that behind the 22-year-old there is a real ‘battery’ active between the provinces of Rimini and Pesaro-Urbino, expert in scamming the elderly. Yesterday, in the summary trial, the prosecutor asked for 4 months’ imprisonment, but the judge took it more harshly. He sentenced him to 1 year and 4 months and a 300 euro fine. Suspended sentence.
