The municipal council today approved the document evaluating the technical-administrative feasibility of the new cycle/pedestrian path, barriered thanks to a liftwhich will connect the train station and the new intermodal hub under construction in the former Sit area.

Financed by the budget change with 500 thousand eurosthe project involves a series of works to create a soft mobility route that starts from the train station to connect, with a protected route along the eastern border of the railway area, to the San Lorenzo railway overpass and then, on the western side, to the new extra-urban transport station under construction.

The route, approximately 400 metres, is more direct than the current one, provides for the barrier via lift and at the same time aims to redevelop some areas of the city (such as Piazza Da Vinci and the Piazza della Portela area in general), with a view to improving liveability, safety and cycle-pedestrian connections.

The executive project is expected by mid-2025 and the construction of the work by mid-2026in time for the start of operations of the new bus station.

The development project of the former Sit area envisages the creation of a new city intermodal hub which has among its objectives a closer and more effective interrelationship between the different mobility systems that belong to it: the Brenner railway line and the Valsugana and Trento-Malé railway linesthe extra-urban road service lines, the urban road transport lines, the cable car to Sardagna and Monte Bondone, the shared bicycle service).

The relocation of the bus station it also provides for a simplification of accessibility and a rationalization of vehicle routes with a reduction in traffic in the central part of the city.

The intermodal hub project is currently under construction and is expected to be tested by 31 March 2026. The transfer of the activities of the extra-urban transport station will take place during the same year.

The project takes into account the prospect of burying the city section of the railway, which also includes the subsequent elimination of the San Lorenzo railway overpass, facilitating connections north/south as well as east/west.

The different timescales foreseen for the construction of the undergrounding of the city section of the railway (which will allow a direct connection between the two stations in the future) and for the activation of the new extra-urban transport station in the former Sit area in 2026 makes it appropriate the creation of a more direct connection system for soft mobility between the train station and the new suburban transport station.
