RAGUSA – Wajdi Zaouali remains in prison. The judge for preliminary investigations Vincenzo Ignaccolo validated the arrest of the twenty-nine year old from Vittoria, of Tunisian origins, accused of killing his mother Mariem Sassi and his sister Samah Zaouali, 34 years old. The man apparently set fire to the family home, in Piazza Unità, after having sprinkled the rooms with flammable liquid.

In this morning’s hearing, in the presence of prosecutor Martina Dall’Amico and defender Giovanni Ascone, Wajdi made admissions and answered the magistrate’s questions. Ascone had asked for a less afflictive measure and, alternatively, placement in a health facility in safe conditions or detention in a prison with a psychiatric section. In fact, the young man had been under treatment at the Mental Health Department.

Meanwhile, her twenty-two-year-old daughter Kamel Zaouali, the 57-year-old man burned by the fire set in the house by his son and admitted to the Palermo Civic Center in intensive care, has arrived in Vittoria. The girl studies law in Turin and is now a guest at a friend’s house. Kamel Zaouali would have opened his eyes slightly and the doctors who follow him have taken this element as a small sign of hope. The patient has very serious burns on 41 percent of his body.
