«Let’s defend democracies with artificial intelligence»

The themes

Fabio Boniolo, 30 years old, originally from Rovigo but resident in Boston (USA), was not there in person but coordinated one of the four working groups that produced the documents then delivered to the presidents of the council of countries of the first seven Western economies. «I was a delegate in 2021, on the occasion of the presidency of the United Kingdom — says Boniolo —, this year I managed the work on the topic of innovation and digital technologies during the summit held in Rome three weeks ago.” The young delegates of each of the four themes lead to the G7 the proposals created by the working groups. A document that reaches the prime ministers of the 7 countries directly. «Artificial intelligence was one of the main themes of the Italian presidency — explains Boniolo —. We focused on the defense of rights and democracy, in a year where there were elections all over the world. So that the elections are not influenced by malicious agents.”

Choice and application

Going into concrete matters, Boniolo, who is a biomedical engineer, says that «during the G7 last year in Japan a rapid response mechanism was presented, we tried to expand it to weaker nations, developing, potentially more vulnerable.” In essence, artificial intelligence, used by those who attack democracies, “is also used for defense”, he argues Boniolo who has been part of this youth organization since 2021. He was in Munich (Germany) finishing his PhD in biomedical engineering when he read a notice from the Foreign Ministry talking about the organization of Y7. He ran and they chose him.

Last year

But he is now 30 years old. «It was my last year as a prospect you represent young people but the goal is to continue, contributing with other engagement groups, for example with Health 7″, he says. Apart from this experience in close contact with the leaders of the great powers, the fight against cancer is Boniolo’s mission, who says: «We are faced with a series of diseases (because each tissue is a different type of cancer) aggressive, changing, evolving but the developments we are selling in recent years are incredible. A big contribution is coming from computational technologies, from artificial intelligence, which allows us to analyze the amount of data produced to give us results that we couldn’t have had before, to the benefit of both research and clinical practice.” And the working future of Boniolo will be right in this field. «I deal with pediatric brain tumors – he explains -. I will continue to do research either in the academic field or with my own start up, we’ll see.” For ten years it has been for study and work abroad but still has Veneto in the heart. «I am in love with Rovigo, it is my happy place, I have family and friends there. Every time I come back it’s incredible.” In Rovigo he graduated from the Paleocapa scientific high school and between Padua and Rovigo he played basketball.
