The collection launched to name the Palasport of Catania after Lyliana Pizzo, coach of the Alidaea team who led the city to win the only Scudetto for women’s volleyball and whose name appears in the «Hall of hunger” of the Italian Volleyball Federation. Journalists, athletes and prominent figures from the economic and social sectors supported the initiative. This was made known by Luisa Garibba Rizzitelli, president of the National Athletes’ Association (Assit), underlining that “unfortunately, despite this wave of affection and support, there is still silence from the mayor Enrico Trantino and his administration”.
«An inexplicable silence – states Luisa Garibba Rizzitelli – which we ask to remedy with the convinced and happy acceptance of the request of an entire city and of sporting Italy. I can’t believe that the mayor shows such inattention towards the values of sport, the sporting history of Lilyana Pizzo and equal opportunities, especially in a historical moment like this. We know that the obstacle of four years since the disappearance of Mrs. Pizzo, which by law must be ten, can be overcome with a request to the Ministry of the Interior, precisely from the Municipality. We therefore expect – comments Luisa Garibba Rizzitelli – that the sensitivity of the mayor and his councilors will manifest itself as soon as possible. Finally, I would like to remind you that of the six main municipal sports facilities in Catania, five are already dedicated to men of sporting prowess, only one remains, the Palasport, which deserves to be called PalaLilyanaPizzo”.
