Appointments in the EU, Orban gives no certainties about von der Leyen: “Fluid situation”. And Tusk snubs Meloni: “We already have a majority”

Giorgia Meloni is at center of the scene. In view of the informal European Council in Brussels which will open discussions on nominations for the next European legislature, the President of the Council is already meeting some European leaders. One is the Hungarian prime minister, courted in the past by the group of European Conservatives led by the leader of the Brothers of Italy, Viktor Orban, who holds back on the name of Ursula von der Leyen: “The meeting went well, it always goes well with the ‘Italy – he said – There is a dinner this evening, we will know after the dinner, the situation is fluid at the moment,’ he said, referring to the reconfirmation of the President of the Commission.

An indefinite position, as is the style of the Hungarian leader in an attempt to assume the role of prime minister to be courted during negotiations, with consequent concessions. But with a majority that holds on paper in parliament even without the support of Budapest, it will also be interesting to understand what the moderate leaders’ requests are regarding the role that Italy will have to play within the summit. “It is not my task to convince Giorgia Meloni – said for example the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk (EPP) – If I understood correctly, we now have a majority in Parliament made up of center parties, such as the Social Democrats, the EPP, the Liberals and some smaller groups. My feeling is that it is more than enough to organize the entire new landscape, including the president of the Commission.”

The other Polish force, in opposition but with an important 35% of votes obtained at the last European elections. that is, the ultra-conservatives of the Pis, are already holding back on the name of von der Leyen. It is not clear, at the moment, whether the attempt is to scuttle the negotiations, taking advantage of the numerous seats in the EU Parliament, or whether it is a way to remain attached to the European party partner, Giorgia Meloni, who the moderate leaders and the nationalist ones are competing to shift the balance of the majority. Tusk is trying in every way to prevent Meloni from becoming decisive for the green light for the appointments because he knows that, in an attempt to keep the conservative front united, the FdI leader could also try to involve the other European groups, Poles in the lead. Thus, the former Polish prime minister and vice-president of the Pis, Mateusz Morawiecki, had a single word with those who asked him if his party will support the candidacy of the outgoing president of the Commission: “We’ll see”.
