Posidonia on the beaches, removal works have begun

A few days after the budget change authorized during the last city meeting, the Municipal Administration of Taranto, led by the Mayor Rinaldo Melucci, started the removal operations of Posidonia Oceanica starting from the beaches of San Vito, which appear to be among those most affected by the phenomenon.

Thanks to a significant investment of 200,000 euros and the timely completion of the administrative procedure by the technical offices of the Heritage Directorate, it will therefore be possible to complete a crucial intervention for the protection of public hygiene and the comfort of bathers.

Although it is an important indicator of the quality of our waters and plays a fundamental role in the marine ecosystem, Posidonia can cause considerable disruption when it accumulates on the shores. In fact, its presence in large quantities can hinder access to the sea, reduce the space available for bathing and, in most cases, can be perceived as an element of olfactory disturbance.

The first scheduled cleaning activities are affecting the San Vito area, precisely the Porticciolo area, they will continue for three days and will not only solve these problems, guaranteeing more welcoming and decorous beaches, but will be conducted with the utmost attention to respecting the ‘Marine environment. Furthermore, as the Heritage Councilor Marcello Murgia was keen to specify, interventions will be carried out to ensure the safety and arrangement of the access routes to the beaches, to which will be added the restoration of the historic sign indicating the location “Porticciolo – Municipality of Taranto”.

Following the best practices to minimize the impact on the natural habitat and ensuring that the removed Posidonia is managed in a sustainable way (it is collected, dried and transported to recovery plants), the Administration led by Mayor Rinaldo Melucci carries out the Yet another project which is a faithful testimony of the commitment aimed at guaranteeing the protection of the natural heritage and the well-being of the citizens, who this morning witnessed the start of the operations, showing appreciation for what the civic body has put in place.
