He loses control of the SUV in an alley, hits a garbage collector and knocks down a large iron beam, which forms the prop of an arch made safe after the 2016 earthquake. The dynamics and causes of the autonomous accident that occurred remain to be clarified. it occurred on Monday morning, around 9.40, in via Sant’Agata, in the heart of the historic center of Spoleto.

Contrary to what was initially reported, the person injured was a 53-year-old Vus waste disposal worker who was working in the alley when the SUV practically went crazy. The woman was hit and the 118 staff who intervened on the scene arranged for the operator to be transferred to the Terni hospital. Based on what emerges, the woman from Cascia, her initials SR, suffered trauma to her pelvis and lumbar. The seventy-year-old who was behind the wheel of the SUV was taken to the emergency room in Spoleto and was a tourist from Rimini. The healthcare staff diagnosed him with thoracic and head trauma and for the latter he remains hospitalized under short-term intensive observation. However, the driver’s wife, who had already gotten out of the passenger compartment at the time of the accident, was not injured.

It is not clear, however, whether the seventy-year-old from Romagna ended up in the second stretch of Via Sant’Agata due to an incorrect indication provided by the navigator with which the SUV is equipped. In fact, along the alley of the historic centre, residents are allowed to park, but not transit, and to manage the steep slope behind the wheel, as well as the narrow width of the street, you certainly need a bit of familiarity.

It remains to be understood, however, how the driver was able to hit an ecological operator, smashing the SUV both in the front and rear parts, simultaneously managing to bend one of the large iron beams, which since the 2016 earthquake have supported the arch located in proximity to the intersection between via Sant’Agata and via Cattaneo.

Precisely because of the demolition of the prop, the local police, who intervened on site together with personnel from the ASE (municipal service company), proceeded to close the street while awaiting the consequent safety measures, which will need to be seen if they will be rapid. or, instead, they will require longer times.
