Modena: Fake policeman tries to defraud elderly woman

MODENA – In the late afternoon of Saturday 15 June 2025, an 83-year-old elderly woman from a city center in the province of Modena, a widow and pensioner, was reached by telephone by a self-styled member of the Carabinieri, who informed her that her son had remained victim of a road accident and who had just been admitted to the Modena polyclinic.

A sort of bailout

The woman, informed of the need to pay a sort of bail to prevent her relative, responsible for the accident, from being arrested, and therefore go to the Post Office to make a withdrawal to be delivered to a Carabinieri who would reach her at the counter of the Postamat, she desperately complained about the situation to other relatives present who fortunately realized that the stranger on the phone was trying to deceive the old woman.
The scammer, having not achieved his goal, desisted from his intent and closed the communication. The incident was immediately reported to the Carabinieri Station, which began investigations and investigations.

Classic scam attempt

This is a classic attempt to deceive elderly people by unscrupulous criminals, who sometimes, even through social media, learn information about people and use it with experience to carry out scams. The cases, although the frequency is stable, are decreasing in percentage in relation to the consummation of the event, given that the themed meetings organized by the Army with citizens have had good results in terms of knowledge of similar crimes and methods of combating them.

New appeal

The Carabinieri, and all law enforcement agencies, do not ask citizens for money over the phone to “remedy” situations of possible criminal relevance. If you receive such requests over the phone, it is a scam attempt
