Suicides in prison, the demonstration

Turning the spotlight on a very serious issue: suicides in prison.
This is the objective of the lawyers of the Criminal Chambers Union who are touring Italy with an oratory marathon “to give a voice to those who don’t have one”.
Regarding the event, which will take place in Verona on Monday 17 June at 11 am in Piazza dei Signori, the Veronese lawyer Barbara Sorgato, member of the national council of the Criminal Chambers Union, declared: “The event in Verona follows the many initiatives that we have organized to raise awareness of the critical situation in prisons and the objective is to have a response from politics. Today, prison overcrowding is reaching the numbers of 2013, the year in which the EU sanctioned Italy for this reason. We have never stopped and have invited all 129 Criminal Chambers of Italy to this initiative, an oratory marathon in which not only lawyers and jurists will participate, but citizens and former prisoners are also invited to speak”.
Giorgio Pasetto, +Europa, will also participate in the event and at the same time launches a proposal: “It is very important to participate. It is a topic that often takes second place but the situation is critical, even in Verona. With this Government the situation has worsened further with the tightening of penalties. Prisoners should not be ghettoized but reintegrated. Sports activity is also very important for prisoners.”
“I – concludes Pasetto – as president of the Bentegodi Foundation, am available to meet the director of the prison to discuss how we can make ourselves useful and bring sport into prison”.
