Martin Scorsese and an incredible new project about the history of the Mediterranean!
Martin Scorsese will return to Sicily to shoot a documentary on the ancient shipwrecks of the Mediterranean, a project that will take him back to his roots in Polizzi Generosa, the hometown of his paternal grandparents. Based on the research of Cranfield University archaeologist Lisa Briggs, the documentary will explore the history of past ships and sailors using advanced technologies such as DNA analysis.
Filming, scheduled for this summer, will take place in various iconic locations in Sicily, including Trapani, Marausa, Selinunte, Lilibeo-Marsala, and the island of Pantelleria. The production will see the collaboration of the Department of Culture of the Sicily Region, Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions, the Sunk Costs Productions of the United Kingdom, and the American producer Chad A. Verdi.

Local authorities are enthusiastic about the project, with the councilor for cultural heritage Francesco Paolo Scarpinato confirming the region’s full support, making relevant archaeological sites and parks available. Among the selected locations there are also the tuna fishery of Favignana, the ancient Mozia, and the medieval village of Erice. Polizzi Generosa, known for its Hellenistic necropolises and medieval castle, will have a special role in the documentary. Mayor Gandolfo Librizzi announced that Scorsese will receive honorary citizenship of the country. This documentary will not only investigate the ancient sea routes of the Mediterranean, but will also represent a significant emotional return for Scorsese to the lands of his ancestors, strengthening his personal connection to Sicily.
