Castagna, poisonous resignation: «Administrators without vision» – Teramo

TERAMO. Primo Riccitelli had communicated his resignation as councilor of the Music and Theater Society to the mayor at the end of April in a very controversial letter. Now Andrea CastagnaTeramo DOC and renowned violinist, reiterated and formalized them to the president Alessandra Striglioni in Tori and to the councilors with a letter in which he once again hits hard at the political majority that governs the Municipality of Teramo, the same one from which he had been appointed.
«In these last two months not much else has happened to make me retrace my steps; therefore, I reiterate my position with reinvigorated firmness and confirm, to this assembly, that I relinquish the prestigious position received from the municipal council of Teramo. Before leaving, however, I would like to draw attention to a fundamental aspect that, overwhelmed by the “acute announcement” syndrome, the recipients of the previous letter (the city administrators, ed) they didn’t understand well. Cultural activity, whatever it is, requires planning, vision and not extemporaneousness; the cultural connotation that an administration wishes to impart to its community must have a long-range planning character and not packages taken, or built here and there, which have the sole task of offering momentary events, let’s call them commercials. A good broth, for goodness sake, but not the dish that would be necessary on the table of the city of Teramo today: the cultural vision.”
Having said this premise, Castagna explains the reason behind his abandonment as follows: «The programming issue, precisely, is decisive for “Riccitelli”. It means being competitive on the market, stopping companies at advantageous prices (trying to obtain useful economic margins for further investments in the various existing projects), consolidating one’s role within cultural circuits and, last but not least, lowering the level of economic risk for the organization of the seasons. With this in mind, I have been urging the mayor of Teramo for four years (also with a formal letter dated 11.16.2021) for the municipal administration to increase the “fixed contribution” for the “Primo Riccitelli”, still stuck at 12,911 euros; the answer so far has always been negative. Fear has been expressed to me several times that such a gesture could “hurt” the sensitivity of other associations in the area. But “Primo Riccitelli”, to use a football term, plays in a league of its own; it cannot be relegated to the role of an association among others, only to then use it as a hub for individually financed events. The Municipality has the moral duty to double, if not triple, the “fixed contribution” precisely because of the precious work of cultural continuity that “Riccitelli” carries out and for the fundamental impact it has on the formation of the community, in particular on young people who, first only with concerts and then also with prose, have had, and we hope they have, the opportunity at home to enjoy, observe and, why not, steal some secrets from the great artists”.
Castagna concludes: «Forgive my digression, but since I was a child I have experienced, and benefited from, the beauty brought to the area by the “Primo Riccitelli”, to which I am linked by a long history of personal affections, family history and friendships. For this reason I leave with the bitterness of those who have not managed to open their eyes, especially their ears, to what the “Riccitelli” represents for the people of Teramo: a socio-cultural point of reference, not only in front of a camera”.(dv)
