The president of Unindustria Calabria, Aldo Ferraraspoke at the presentation of the Bank of Italy’s annual report on the regional economy of Calabria.
«The punctual one analysis by Bank of Italy on the performance of the Calabrian economy in 2023 contains important positive signals to be welcomed. Looking at companies, in fact, it is significant that all financial, economic and equity balance sheet indices have shown positive performances, consolidating the results of previous years. These data underlie a theme of strategic importance such as the solidity of companies: around it it is therefore possible to plan prospective interventions to strengthen the entire Calabrian production sector”.

«In this sense, the fact that permanent employment contracts have increased only reinforces the feeling of greater confidence among businesses in the future. Furthermore, although in absolute terms the region still has to recover a lot of ground compared to the country, yet another considerable consecutive increase in the value of Calabrian exports provides further inspiration to look with confidence at the growth of our companies. The growth of exports and turnover of companies that target a market outside the Calabrian onetherefore, can be understood as an indication for tracing the route towards the definition of policies that are increasingly attentive to stimulating the creation of businesses in Calabria that look to markets other than the internal one”.
The analysis of demographic data
«The demographic data contained in the Bankitalia analysis, in fact, highlight how the “demographic winter” of Calabria (given by the combination of emigration, especially of young people and graduates, reduction in the birth rate and aging of the population) translates not only into medium-long term risks for our region, but also into contingent critical issues. This is why, on the one hand to combat the low birth rate of businesses and on the other to build a production system highly oriented towards the most populous and richest international markets, it could prove successful to push and incentivize investments in highly digitalised sectors and in the technological sector” .

This aspect brings us to the industrial areas: it is now urgent and urgent that investments for the redevelopment of the areas destined to host production facilities take shape, otherwise it will be even more difficult to compete with the other regions of Southern Italy precisely on attractiveness”.
The question of the Single Zes for the South
«It being understood that from this perspective there remain doubts about the prospects of the Zes Unica for the South. In fact, the elimination of the decontribution for the South, which served to compensate for external diseconomies, is not good news; furthermore, doubts remain about the adequacy of the resources allocated to the Zes, their distribution system and the deadline of 15 November as the final date for the conclusion of the investments for which an extension has not yet been received. Businesses need certainty to be able to plan investments for the next few years.”
