Supersport is the most spectacular class in the total sense of the term. Strategy, few overtakings and, above all, a lot of constant tension make every spectator glued to their seat. In short, we are faced with the perfect recipe for motorcycle competitions.

The Supersport World Championship has reached the conclusion of its fourth round of 2024, the Emilia Romagna Round at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. The riders of the intermediate class are ready for a race characterized by hot asphalt temperatures.

The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli was inaugurated in 1972. The then Santa Monica Autodrome has undergone numerous changes over the years, which have enlarged and modernized it. The current shape and meaning are the result of a major renovation that took place in 2007, while the layout appears unchanged from the following year. In the 4,200 km that make up one lap, there are short straights interspersed with long sequences of curves, 16 in total, 10 on the right and 6 on the left. Misano appeared in Supersport in all editions except those dated 2009, 2013 and 2020 (skipped due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

34 drivers show up at the start. Jorge Navarro and Lorenzo Baldassarri swap places, with the Spaniard moving onto Orelac’s Ducati and the Italian going onto WRP-RT’s Triumph. We also see the return of Simon Jespersen to the series, replacing Okubo on Vince64’s Kawasaki.

Van Wikselaar and Smits, the wild cards from Assen, do not confirm their commitment to Misano. The two vacant places are filled on this occasion by Luca Ottaviani, rider of the MV Agusta of Extreme Racing Service, and Alessandro Sciarretta, who brings the Ducati of ZPM Motorsport Racing to the track. Both come from the CIV Supersport 600.

The race

Montella takes a divine start and manages to overcome Huertas. The Spaniard, however, proved to be very fast right from the start and managed to finish the first lap ahead of the man from Salerno. Manzi, third, was overtaken by Debise at Rio and by Navarro at Quercia. The new arrival in Ducati is fast and overtakes Debise at the Quercia on the second pass, who, despite a strenuous defence, soon has to give up.

In the meantime we witness an LLP by Sarmoon, penalized for dangerous driving, Giannini’s fall in turn 6 and the technical problem that puts Mahias out of the game. Furthermore, Vostatek also slipped in the first laps, but managed to get back into the running.

Defeat for Yamaha Thailand, which sees both Sarmoon and Keankum on the ground during the first half of the race. The same fate also befalls Oncu at Rio. The Turk, however, manages to get back on his feet and continue to the finish line.

The situation in the top positions is particularly delicate in the middle of the race. Montella returns to the front by taking advantage of a mistake by Huertas, while Debise takes advantage of Navarro’s weaknesses to overtake him and obtain the lowest step of the podium.

Montella and Huertas continue, at least spiritually, yesterday’s duel. The Italian is in front and doesn’t have to make even the slightest mistake to maintain a very important position from a championship perspective. The Spaniard, however, will have to find the hole he can squeeze into to take his second victory of the weekend.

Huertas overtakes Montella at the end of the fourteenth lap and begins to escape. Apparently the Spaniard didn’t have any particular difficulty in breaking down his opponent’s defenses, as he began to slow down and lose ground.

Edwards retires due to a technical problem during lap 15. A few seconds later Sofuoglu also has to leave the race due to a crash at the Curvone. The race direction let the race run for a minute before displaying the red flag due to the oil leak that the MV Agusta #54 suffered, which ended the race three laps early.

Adrian Huertas thus takes his Ducati, once again, to the top step of the podium, contested in Race 2 with Yari Montella and Valentin Debise. Manzi, Navarro, Schroetter, Caricasulo, Tuuli, Antonelli, Booth-Amos, Corsi (first in the SSP Challenge), Ottaviani, Bayliss, van Straalen and Biesiekirski finish the points.

Adrian Huertas has now launched himself towards winning the 2024 title. The twenty-year-old born in Madrid, taken by Ducati to replace the defending champion Bulega, has proven to be the right rider to continue what could become a winning streak.

Edwards, sixteenth at 19, is still leader of the SSP Challenge. Ducati (183) continues to remain ahead of everyone in the constructors’ standings, while the team is still in the hands of Ten Kate Yamaha (168).

Next appointments

Sunday in Misano continues with the last races of the Yamaha R3 bLU cRU World Cup (4.15pm) and Trofeo Aprilia RS 660 (5.00pm). Supersport will then move to Donington Park, home of the British Round, which will be held from 12 to 14 July. Here, in addition to the Superbike, the WCR, Yamaha R3 bLU cRU World Cup, Kawasaki British Superteen and BMW F 900 R Cup will take to the track.
