«The “perfect murder” is taking place in the city»

CROTONE “The perfect murder” is taking place in the city of Crotone. This is supported by the provincial secretary of the Pythagorean Democratic Party, Leo Barberio, who today released a note on the convocation of the Decision-making Services Conference, set by the Minister of the Environment for next June 26, which should identify the solution to dispose of the poisons present in the industrial area of Crotone. The meeting was called to establish to which site in Crotone the waste (including radioactive waste) currently stored in the seafront landfill should be transferred. In his note Barberio launches heavy accusations against Roberto Occhiuto, president of the Calabrian regional council, the Ministry of the Environment and the mayor of Crotone, Vincenzo Voce. They are, in Barberio’s opinion, the protagonists of the agreement that will end with the “perfect murder”. The hypothesis of a “crime” contested by the secretary of the Democratic Party is that of wanting to favor Eni Rewind’s project to bury the poisons in Crotone which, instead, should be transferred to landfills located outside the Calabrian territory, as provided for in the signed agreement on 24 October 2019 with the first decision-making services conference. “The evidence – writes Barberio in a note released today – is now clear: the plan to allow Eni to leave the waste from the reclamation of the former Pertusola in Crotone is almost complete” and “the decision-making services conference, scheduled for next June 26th at MASE, will be the theater of this “perfect murder””. Eni Rewind asked to set aside the first decision, that of the decision-making Services Conference of 24 October 2019 and obtained it. “The documentation – writes Barberio – confirms Eni Rewind’s desire to identify sites for the disposal of special toxic waste within the municipality of Crotone”. Without citing him, Barberio responds to what Voce wrote in a post on Facebook. In this post Voce denies that there is an ongoing project and the intention to authorize the Giammiglione landfill proposed by the Abruzzo entrepreneur Guglielmo Maio and Barberio, refers to the content of the device convening the meeting on June 26th. “Where is it written?”, asks Voce in his post and Barberio cites the text of the convocation of the Conference of decision-making services on June 26th in which, in fact, the Ministry of the Environment on page 6 writes about the note from the company Maio Guglielmo Srl and of the “document relating to the construction of the plant in the Giammiglione area”.
“An attempt – writes Barberio regarding the Maio project – rejected seven times in the last 20 years”. The project, however, returns to the surface thanks to “the recent adoption of the new Regional Waste Plan by the Calabria Region, on 13 March 2024, which combined with the request for variation of the POB Phase 2, on 15 March 2024, opens a breach for the construction of a new landfill”. What happens is that “the MASE, without any opinion from the local authorities, already seems to take for granted the creation of a landfill of five million tons of waste, a decision that would imply serious consequences for the Crotone community”.
Continuing. Berberio adds: “The Democratic Party, together with the minority councilors of the regional council, is actively trying to modify the regional waste plan.” It is intended to prevent “the perfect murder” “through the convening of an ad hoc regional council session”. The “joint request of all the minority councilors” was filed some time ago “but the president of the regional council; Filippo Mancuso, and the council led by Roberto Occhiuto are trying to postpone the session, showing a complicity that we cannot tolerate”. If the regional council were to, before next June 26th, modify the waste plan in the part that favors Eni Rewind’s project to leave the poisons in Crotone, the reclamation narrative would change completely. In this, every decision should be made in compliance with the content of the 2019 Decision Conference.
“The Mayor of Crotone, Vincenzo Voce, who declared that “ENI owes nothing to the city of Crotone”, – continues Barberio – did not take a clear position, preferring to publish only what is convenient for him, such as MASE’s request to have a response to his questions, hiding, however, the response from ENI which he received last May 28th”. According to Barberio, therefore, “the only solution to protect Crotone is to modify the Regional Waste Plan before June 26th”. “We must not listen to the propaganda of Voce and Occhiuto – writes the secretary of the Democratic Party – who are proposing a new law to modify the areal factor, a measure that would arrive too late to stop the creation of the Giammiglione landfill. With the modification of the Regional Waste Plan, we can strengthen the 2019 agreement which obliges Eni to dispose of waste outside the region”. For its part, “the Democratic Party will continue to fight for the well-being and health of the citizens of Crotone, opposing any attempt to exploit our territory for economic interests to the detriment of our community”.
In conclusion, Barberio writes: “If the decision-making services conference of next June 26 were to approve the changes to the POB phase 2 leaving the waste in Crotone, we will proceed through legal channels by delegating the appeal to the lawyer Pitaro, who follows the legal aspects of the matter, to Tar. We will not allow such an injustice to be perpetrated against the citizens of Crotone.”.
