ADDA, BEYOND THE RIVER – Telecolor

Today we dedicate the episode to the Adda river in two locations Pizzighettone known as the Walled City and Crotta d’Adda. Pizzighettone is divided in two by the Trento and Trieste bridge over the Adda, on one side the Gera of Celtic origin and on the opposite bank the early medieval one. The toponym is composed of the word “pizzo” in the sense of a pointed spit of land and the personal name Guittone who once owned the fiefdom. We will see the Torre del Guado which is what remains of an ancient castle built in the 14th century by the Cremonese to defend the border with Lodi. In the spring of 1525, for about fifty days, it was the prison of the King of France Francis I, captured by the Spanish in the Battle of Pavia. Then the walls which have undergone changes over time, the Case Matte, 93 in all which appear as large vaulted rooms which served as military accommodation, a warehouse, or a shooting position for enemies. Starting from the fall of the Roman Empire, thanks to the various waves of barbarian populations, the ancient name “Acerrae” is no longer mentioned while, in its place, the toponym of “Forum (or Pizus) Juguntorum (or Diuguntorum) emerges. Then we will go to Crotta d’Adda which derives its name from a branch of the noble Crotta or Crotti family of Lombard lineage. Another version of the origin of the name is that it derives from the Lombard term crotta (cellar) or from the Latin “crupta or crypta” (cave). I will talk to you about the ancient profession of the river ferrymen who carried people and goods from one bank of the Adda to the other and of course also about other rivers such as Ticino and Po. Then I will talk to you about the mythology of Vacuna, goddess linked to nature, water and woods and the cult of fertility. She was a minor or secondary goddess and ancient authors describe her as a very ancient and obscure divinity from the Latin “Vacuum or Vacuitas” or essence, emptiness” because little is known about her, an elusive, elusive, mysterious, indefinable goddess. And finally of a road called Strada Regina which historians claim was a commercial route that ran along the banks of the Adda
