Reggio Calabria penultimate in Italy for sustainable urban mobility

Among the 18 cities monitored, it comes in second to last place, only Messina next door is worse. The data from the Observatory on sustainable urban mobility it photographs a city that is still very far from European standards that look to 2030 as the terminus for the development of a green system.
The road appears to be all uphill, according to what emerges from the investigation Clean Citiesthe reality that embraces around 70 European NGOs and cross-references data from official sources: Istat, but also Ispra, Eea (European Environment Agency) and Cnr.
In the meantime, we start from the Urban Plan for sustainable mobility that the City of the Strait is still waiting for (while the Metropolitan City has already approved it in 2022). Therefore, a framework that identifies strategies and goals is missing. In this vacatio, the increase continues to be recorded (the time period analyzed covers the five-year period between 2017 and 2022) in the rate of private motorisation (cars/1000 inhabitants), reaching 698 in 2022 – to which are added 123 motorbikes per thousand inhabitants – that is, for every 1000 people there are 821 motorbikes. Approximately 73% of the private vehicle fleet is over eight years old and, over 60%, has a Euro 4 or lower classification. Only 2.3 out of a thousand electric cars. The Municipality has designed and is building five new parking lots in various parts of the city, for a total of two thousand parking spaces. But even on this point there are different difficulties recorded in the field. Despite the projects in the pipeline to promote intermodality and bringing users closer to public transport which, especially in the city area, is only guaranteed through buses, as there are no tram or trolley networks.
