TREVISO – Flurry of calls to Contarina for the increases in waste bills. There are those who have seen the amount rise by up to 50%. Others by 20%. And so on. The situations are different. But the increase is a fact. The increases were approved last year by Priula, the basin council that defines the tariff for 49 municipalities. But it is in this period that they began to really make themselves felt on the pockets of the Trevisos. The nasty surprise came with the delivery of the invoices for the urban waste management service relating to the balance for 2023 and the first advance payment for 2024. The difference between the first bill this year and the first one last year is immediately caught the eye.

THE CASES

An example? A family of four people, including two minor children, residing in Villorba went from having to pay just over 125 euros to having to shell out over 150. Substantially without having changed their behavior, and consequently the production of waste, although concerns separate waste collection. Another family from Povegliano, this time made up of two people, saw the bill rise from just over 70 euros to almost 130 euros. Yet another, still in the same area, went from 130 to 160 euros. And so on. The list could be long. It must be said that, at the same time, there are families who have been asked to pay a bill that is currently smaller than in the past. The differences are the result of the introduction of the new mechanism for calculating the punctual tariff.

MOBILITATION

On balance, however, the increases outweigh the reductions. This is an objective fact. After all, the Priula basin council itself clarified that on average there was an increase in prices of 8%. The point is that in several cases real peaks are reached. So much so that on social networks there are even those who hope for a demonstration in front of the Contarina headquarters with bills in hand. For now it is anger that speaks. But there is no shortage of those who ask specific questions. This is the case of Gianni Battagli, a commercial agent, who received a bill relating to the first deposit and the balance for the previous year which went from 125 euros in 2023 to over 150 this year. «We are a “recycling” family. But for what purpose? – He asks himself – our conditions have not changed compared to last year. Indeed, as a family we have reduced the production of dry waste, going from 60 to 47 kilograms. And despite this we find ourselves with an increase in the bill of almost 20%. It’s a leap that has no justification.” Like many others, he has already turned to both Priula and Contarina. Formally, through a certified e-mail. The company let it be known that they will respond in the same way. «What is certain is that the conduct of Priula and Contarina is not rewarding for those who try to be virtuous», Battagli draws the conclusions. Others that “the more you recycle, the less you pay”, in short. Given this, the illustration of the punctual rate contained in the bills almost sounds like a mockery. It all revolves around the “European principle of pay for what you throw away”. «Puctual pricing – we read – encourages virtuous behavior and represents a determining factor in reducing the quantity of waste produced, as well as increasing the responsibility of every citizen towards correct management of the waste they produce, encouraging recycling». The new tariff takes into account 4 components. From the Care of the territory item, i.e. the cleaning services of squares and streets, to that relating to Access to the service, calculated based on the areas and volume of containers. Up to the item Collection, understood as the number of emptyings and accesses to the EcoCentres, and the new wording dedicated to Treatment, defined on the basis of the quantity of waste delivered and therefore to be transported to the plants that transform it into secondary materials or energy to be used in other production areas. The cycle is undoubtedly virtuous. But for some it’s becoming way too salty.
