“Let’s celebrate her birthday at home, I’ll go get her and take her home”, said the father of the new MEP Roberto Salis on Friday upon hearing the news of her release. Ilaria Salis returns to Italy on Saturday afternoon after approximately sixteen months of detention in Hungary. She will celebrate her 40th birthday with her family on Monday.

The Italian teacher was elected to the European Parliament with the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra. More than 165 thousand people wrote Salis on the ballot paper in Lombardy, Liguria, Valle d’Aosta and Piedmont. Immediately after the news of the election, the lawyer Gyorgy Magyar filed a request for release from prison by virtue of the principle of parliamentary immunity for those elected to the European Chamber.
