In Calabria, stop working during the hottest hours: the Region’s ordinance

Catanzaro – With his own ordinance, the president of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto, has established a ban on working “in conditions of prolonged exposure to the sun, from 12.30 to 16.00, with immediate effect and until August 31st 2024, across the entire regional territory”. The ban applies – we read in the ordinance – in the “areas or zones affected by the carrying out of work in the agricultural and horticultural sector, as well as on construction sites and similar, limited only to the days in which the risk map indicated on the website www. worklimate.it/scelta-mappa/sole-attivita-fisica-alta/ referring to: ‘workers exposed to the sun’ with ‘intense physical activity’ at 12:00, signals a ‘high’ risk level”.

Occhiuto’s ordinance responds – we read further – “to the urgency of providing, pending an agreement between the employer and trade union partnership, which the region will promote, which can better protect, on an ordinary basis, health of the subjects who operate in the climatic conditions described”, and to the need for “the protection of public health and hygiene aimed at reducing the impact of environmental thermal stress on health and, therefore, the risks to which the relevant personnel are exposed, thus avoiding ‘seriously detrimental consequences’. In recent hours, the ordinance had also been requested from the President of the Region by the trade unions.
