Viterbo – The Melvin Jones park returned to the citizens: “The patience of the people of Viterbo is repaid”

New flowers, plants and greenery trying to extinguish the controversy over the “Walk around the walls”.

VITERBO – Grand inauguration this morning for the renovated Melvin Jones park, near the Chamber of Commerce. For the occasion, the mayor Chiara Frontini cut the ribbon announcing the end of the PNRR works for that portion of greenery close to the city walls.

Also present at the event were the councilor Emanuele Aronne, as head of the works, but also the former mayor Giancarlo Gabbianelli who 20 years earlier had inaugurated that small green space near the walls for the first time.

“I hope that in another 20 years it will have the same care that Chiara Frontini is showing towards the city today, despite the difficulties – declared Gabbianelli – This is a real garden, which wants to respect the translation. For the first time in many years, I am seeing the city reborn.”

Councilor Aronne goes into detail about the works. “We saved this park – he insisted – The basic project included much more stone and much less greenery. There have been controversies from a policy that needs to change, even from those who voted for the concrete pouring that was initially planned here.”

Aronne’s reference is obviously to the opposition councilor Luisa Ciambella, who has repeatedly harshly criticized the councilor and the administration in general on the work around the walls.

As to why it was not possible to replicate this green also in the stretch that goes from Porta Romana to Porta della Verità, Aronne intervened again, explaining how in that case it was not possible also due to the indications of the Superintendence. “Here we were able to get involved and change the project – he declared – It was not possible to do the same between Porta della Verità and Porta Romana because, also following the indications of the Superintendence, the will of the project in that case was aimed at saving the walls, there much older than those present in Melvin Jones Park. Furthermore, there was already very little greenery there and there was no possibility of increasing it profitably. It was not usable by citizens, which instead was possible to do between Melvin Jones Park and Piazzale Gramsci, where many new plants and flowers will be planted.”

Furthermore, a huge amount of greenery will be added between Porta Romana and Porta San Pietro, where various redevelopment works are now underway. Among them also those linked to the recovery of the church of Santa Maria delle Fortezze, temporarily suspended due to the discovery of bones perhaps coming from the bombings of the Second World War “or even before”, as reiterated by the site managers.

“This park tells what the PNRR is in Viterbo – concluded Aronne – Thanks go to the people of Viterbo who had the patience to experience the inevitable inconvenience caused by the works. Maintenance has already been agreed for two years and the company will cut the grass and take care of the trees, flowers and plants.”
