There CAI section of Massa was shocked by the administration’s choice of close Via Alta Tambura to traffic. This bewilderment arises from both the content and the method adopted.

The CAI section of Massa has never held back from constructive discussions with public bodies and has always maintained a proactive attitude in all circumstances: we would have done so on this occasion too. Instead we learned from the Municipality’s website that everything had been decided, without any discussion. As regards the content, we would like to point out that the problem of access to the river had already been addressed a few years ago during the participatory River Contract process.

From the discussion, specific actions were established, agreed with the administration, to address the issue in a constructive way. Among the agreed actions, it was never agreed to block the road, but to establish an adequate parking ban and to establish a “public shuttle bus with an itinerary that responds to the needs of the population of mountain villages and is useful for limiting attendance”. Furthermore, it was planned to create “Information campaigns aimed at users of the Renara Torrent and Frigido River in collaboration between the Municipality and associations”.

The coordinator of these actions within the River Contract was the Municipality of Massa. The actions identified were the result of a serious and participatory discussion which saw citizens, associations and local authorities contributing with ideas, experiences and technical skills. Two years have passed since the signing of the contract in Fiume, which also saw us from the Italian Alpine Club and of these actions, like all the others, there is no trace.

The administration’s current decision actually draws a line on those actions, cancels months of collective work, contradicts itself regarding the commitments made, debases a participatory process that cost public money. We want to underline that effectively blocking an access route to the main hiking, speleological and environmental paths of our territory goes in stark contrast to what was stated by Dr. Billi of the Institute for Tourist Studies of Florence in his recent hearing in the tourism council commission : the tourist strength of our territory is represented by the beauty of nature which must be coordinated and developed with the marine part also through better transport logistics.

It is useless to entrust the studies to experts in the sector if you then do the exact opposite, effectively denying the attendance of a part of our territory considered unique at a national level.
