Palermo, game over for Pigliacelli

Today’s edition of “Il Giornale di Sicilia” focuses on Pigliacelli’s experience in Palermo which is nearing its conclusion.

The story between Mirko Pigliacelli and Palermo has come to an end, with the Sicilian club deciding to focus on Sebastiano Desplanches for the role of starting goalkeeper. The decision, supported by the City Group, was confirmed, leaving Pigliacelli with two options: accept a new destination proposed by the club or remain in the team without being included in the official list for Serie B.

Pigliacelli, who defended Palermo’s posts for two years, will leave the team after conceding 109 goals in 78 games, with an average of 1.4 goals per game. During his stay, he saved two penalties, demonstrating particular skill in close-range shots and protecting the post, although he encountered difficulties with shots from outside the area.

With Pigliacelli’s departure, Palermo will have to look for a new reserve goalkeeper. The club could move towards an expert goalkeeper, following the trend of coach Dionisi, who in the past has focused on goalkeepers such as Brignoli and Consigli. Among the potential candidates are Consigli, whose contract with Sassuolo is currently expiring, and Berisha, whose contract with Empoli expires soon.

Furthermore, in Serie B there are several goalkeepers whose contract expires at the end of the month, including Seculin from Modena, Zoet from Spezia and Poluzzi from Südtirol. Palermo will have to carefully evaluate the market opportunities to find a reliable replacement for Pigliacelli, considering the importance of the goalkeeping role in the team.
