Genny shakes hands in Naples and Giuli moves to the door of culture

«The most progressive among conservatives» (this is how he describes himself), he reasons about Gramsci and hegemonies

In Transatlantico you listen and take notes (especially mental ones). We gather gossip, confidences, rumors, treachery. What happened in the last European elections matters the right thing. There are ancient, resistant situations and projects: such as the replacement of the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano. The idea has been buzzing in Giorgia Meloni’s head for some time. It’s not a gaffe problem. If it depended on them, the wonderful minister and almost brother-in-law Francesco Lollobrigida – a formidable collector – would have his days numbered. The fact is that the prime minister never fully trusted Genny. A mistrust that was a few years old: when the then director of Tg2, always profoundly right-wing, came down from the Fratelli d’Italia stage and immediately went up to the Lega stage, ready to embrace Matteo Salvini. Loyalty, as you know, for Meloni is an absolute value. In private life and, above all, in political life. Naturally, the prime minister doesn’t imagine anything traumatic. Rather a soft replacement, which would be very, very soft if, say, Genny were to run for the centre-right to lead the Campania Region. Genny understood the message and, in the last electoral campaign, with the excuse of going to support the candidates in Strasbourg, he toured the whole Region, between handshakes and various winks, always stopping in Naplesthe city where he was born 62 years ago, where he graduated in Law and where he also edited the newspaper Rome.

At this point, you may be wondering: what about Culture in its place? The perfect identikit is that of Alessandro Giuli, the current director of the MAXXI foundation – National Museum of the Arts of the 21st Century, 48 years old and a close friend of Giorgia, journalist and, for a long time, the great name of the Sheet, an intellectual always on the right who defines himself as “the most progressive among conservatives”cultured and empathetic, quick and never banal, in fact a surprising and provocative book of his has recently been published for Rizzoli, with an eloquent title, Gramsci is alive. Syllabus for a contemporary hegemony. Because cultural hegemony – as Giuli knows – was and remains the main problem of this government: how to accredit a new one, without having to convince ourselves that “Dante was right-wing”? (that time Genny was really amazing).

Dear Director,
I would like to point out that I have no intention of going beyond the “door of Culture” as I am already happily at the helm of one of the most important Italian cultural institutions, the MAXXI Foundation.
I was appointed President of MAXXI by the current Minister Sangiuliano, whom I thank for his trust and esteem: an esteem that I reciprocate, to which is added the feeling of fraternal friendship that binds us.
Thanks for the attention,
Best regards.
Alessandro Giuli
