Luminara San Ranieri 2024, Sunday 16 June, the eve of the patron saint San Ranieri, almost 100,000 wax lights will illuminate the two kilometers of the Lungarni in Pisa.

As the Municipality of Pisa underlines, “enhancing the architectural forms of the historic buildings with the glow of the flames to create a suggestive and unique atmosphere. It is the Luminara festival which attracts thousands of people to Pisa every year. Once again, great attention will be paid to the environment and the total recovery of the approximately 100 thousand candles. Once dismantled, in fact, the supplier company will recover the unused wax and recycle the PVC parts (cups) and metal parts (windproof caps)”.

In Pisa Blue Palace will be open until midnight on the occasion of the Luminara on Sunday 16 June 2024. It will be possible to visit the exhibition ‘Manuele Fior. Viaggio a colori’, edited by Giorgio Bacci and ‘Ancient and modern: Dolfo the sculptor in the home of Palazzo Blu’, curated by Ilario Luperini and in collaboration with the Dolfo archive.

Monday 17 June, on the occasion of the feast of San RanieriPalazzo Blu will be open with holiday hours from 10am to 8pm.

The Luminara is part of the ‘Pisan June‘, organized by the Municipality of Pisa, mayor Michele Conti, which includes a rich calendar of appointments which as per tradition will have as its culminating moments the Luminara (Sunday 16 June), the Palio di San Ranieri (Monday 17 June) and the Gioco del Ponte (Saturday 29 June).

The Luminara program. Around 3.00 pm, around 190 specially selected employees will come into action, alongside the staff of the Municipality and the company in charge, to begin, one by one, the lighting of the 100 thousand candles on the Lungarni, between the Cittadella Bridge and the Ponte of the Fortress, until dusk arrives when, thanks to the switching off of public and private artificial lighting, the Lungarni will begin to immerse themselves in the magical evening of San Ranieri.

At 11pm, as per tradition, the fireworks display is scheduled to begin on the Lungarni, with a series of spectacular fireworks, lasting approximately 25 minutes, fired from 10 floating platforms placed on the Arno between the Fortezza bridge and Solferino bridge.

Safety measures The evening that every year attracts tens of thousands of people to crowd the Lungarni requires extensive security measures. A plan approved at the time has been prepared Committee for Public Order and Security which involves the involvement of law enforcement workers, firefighters, health workers and Civil Protection and a task force of 140 stewards who will monitor the entire affected area.

Below, in detail, the measures envisaged, in collaboration with the Prefecture and Police Headquarters of Pisa.

Health stations: The health plan prepared by 118 provides for the presence of 20 ambulances (made available by the Italian Red Cross, Mercy, Public Assistance) e 14 medical teams on foot which, starting from 7.00 pm, will move to the Lungarni, as well as an advanced medical post. All health activities will be coordinated by 118 personnel present at the Coordination Center of the Civil Protection of the Municipality. THE Fire fighters, present in the Coordination Center, have planned to strengthen the service with the deployment of additional teams in the area and on the Arno river to ensure faster interventions. One of the Fire Brigade vessels will have medical personnel on board to manage any critical issues.

First aid: 4 decongestion and first aid areas have been identified, in connection with the operations rooms: Piazza Santa Caterina (North 1), Piazza Dante (North 2), Piazza Vittorio (South 1), Piazza San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno (South 2).

Escape routes: All the streets overlooking the Lungarni will be monitored by the steward service and the police, to keep them free from cars, cycles, scooters, occupations of public land, etc. From 6.00 pm on Sunday 16 June and until 5.00 am the following day, all escape routes will be kept free of artefacts such as chairs, tables, umbrellas, displays, etc. The exceptions are platforms, dehors and construction sites already present in the escape routes and regularly authorized by the Municipality of Pisa.

Ban on the sale of drinks in glass and possession of explosive materials. A specific union ordinance has been prepared which, starting from 4.00 pm on Sunday 16 June, until 5.00 am the following day, as well as from 4.00 pm to 12.00 am on Monday 17 June, prohibits: the sale, even for takeaway, of drinks in glass or aluminum containers; the administration of drinks in glass containers, unless consumption takes place within public establishments or in the areas pertaining to them; the possession of drinks in glass or aluminum containers in public streets or squares or open to the public; the possession or use of explosive materials, use fireworks, rockets, firecrackers, barrels, smoke bombs and similar devices containing detonating, exploding, smoke-producing or irritating mixtures, except those authorized by the Municipality of Pisa.
