«When I showed the photos of that wedding, many fell in love with this garden and would like to have the opportunity to celebrate the most beautiful day at the foot of the Rocca». Also because, those in Lugo who decide to get married in the Municipality go down that ramp after having pronounced the fateful “yes, I want it”.

Remembering the beauty of that green lawn – because it was green then – is the owner of the Jolly bar, Dennis Guerrini, one of the businesses across the street from the very dry garden in Piazza Martiri della Libertà. Thus reduced by the failure of some to comply with the rules and by the excessive tolerance with which the municipal administration has handled the problem so far. Photographers know this well, and to immortalize the bride and groom in that garden they have to desperately search for a still green corner amidst the arid yellow and dirt road.

And so it was he who launched a proposal: «Why can’t we try to use that area to organize small events or ceremonies? – asks the manager as he advances his candidacy -. I would be happy to try, and if everything goes well, as I believe, next year the Municipality could make an open call for anyone who wants to invest resources and ideas in the square. Whoever will have the honor of using that garden, which will obviously remain public, will assume the burden of safeguarding it, providing for the maintenance of the greenery and decoration, and returning it in the same state in which it was granted. It’s not about privatizing it, but about protecting it. Otherwise the result is there for all to see.”

As he reiterates this – in the middle of the afternoon – the first kids arrive to start the derby. The ball on one side and the bicycles leaning against the Andrea Costa monument. Better those – some would say – of the bivouac which hosts that base towards the evening.

«Setting up that area with some seats and tables suited to the context – explains the owner of the Jolly – means being able to plan cultural initiatives, such as the presentation of books and niche music festivals, or truly dedicated to children, without them risking getting hit. or getting hit by a bicycle. But above all it means attracting people, creating related activities and being able to monitor at zero cost. And where there is order and cleanliness it is less easy to deface the spectacular panorama of the square.”
