Ancona, the Roman amphitheater will be opened on June 21st

The result of an agreement between the Municipality of Ancona and the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro Urbino, from 21 June the Roman Amphitheater will be brought back to life with a rich program that will continue throughout the summer. With its 780 seats made available after the reorganization of the spaces, the Amphitheater will host high-level meetings and performances.

A new space

After the first interventions by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro Urbino, the municipal administration has planned another series of maintenance works on the structures present on site for the Roman Amphitheatre. The amphitheater will therefore be the setting for a series of different performances, in addition to those of the united ancient theaters (Tau).

A new season

It begins Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June with Popsophia appointments, which will propose the first edition of Ankoneide, promoted by the Municipality of Ancona and the Marche Region. The calendar includes two philoshows of philosophy and music to celebrate the symbolic date of the summer solstice. The two evenings will be dedicated respectively to the moment of transition that marks the beginning of the summer season and to the iconic and revolutionary figure of Raffaella Carrà.

In July it will be the turn of Ancona Jazz, which will start on Tuesday 16 July at the Amphitheater with the quartet of pianist and singer Sergio Cammariere, plus Giovanna Famulari’s cello. It continues on Friday 19th with Rossana Casale and her group, who will present the new album Almost Blue and ends on Friday 26th July with the duo Fresu and Marcotulli (trumpet and piano).

The program of the United Ancient Theaters (Tau) includes two shows, scheduled for Monday 22 July and Thursday 8 August. On July 22nd, Plautus’ Amphitryon will be performed, performed and directed by Emilio Solfrizzi. For the evening of August 8, Tau presents Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus, adapted and directed by Giuseppe Argirò.

The four Adriatic Mediterranean events will close the Amphitheater’s summer season. The complete AdMed program will be presented in the traditional press conference. The ticket office will be managed by Amat, with advance sales on Vivaticket.

The Amphitheater’s summer program was created with the support of the sponsors Viva Energia Spa, Estra Spa, Eco Demolizioni.

The statements

Daniele Silvetti – Mayor of Ancona

We had announced a rich and intense summer and our proposal materializes not only with the richness of the contents, but also with particularly valuable containers, such as the Amphitheatre, which we are very proud to reopen to all the people who will come to visit us and which will make the city of Ancona alive and vital.

I thank the superintendent architect Cecilia Carlorosi because she immediately showed great availability, understanding the importance of this moment of giving back to the city a space, not only physical, but above all deeply identifying for Ancona, of which it is the beating heart. A very intense transmission belt was immediately created on this theme and we had a small taste of it with the performance last September: a first step in that direction which today materializes with a program of cultural and musical events, certainly an important stage which will characterize the summer journey of the people of Ancona and beyond. All this is achieved thanks to the work and collaboration of historical subjects. The Amphitheater represents a formidable triangle for Ancona, together with the Mole Vanvitelliana and the Arena del Mare, which characterizes an ideal route within the city. This is a first edition, which we strongly wanted, and which says a lot about the quality of our relationships with the institutions, with the Superintendency and also with the State Property Office, with which we are pursuing sharing paths for the reopening of important spaces in the city .

Anna Maria Bertini – Councilor for Culture

Thanks to the public synergies, with the Superintendency, and private synergies – thanks to the sponsors Viva Energia Spa, Estra Spa, Eco Demolizioni – which have been implemented in the area, the Municipality of Ancona brings the Roman Amphitheater back to life. First show on June 21st with Solideo, within the two Ankoneide days of Popsophia. On June 22nd the show will instead be dedicated to Raffaella Carrà.

The event in the amphitheater last September was a taster, in view of the 2024 summer season, which will see 11 performances with the inauguration on June 21st. The Roman amphitheater of Ancona saw the joint and hard work of all those involved, with the aim of giving back to the city a beloved, iconic and long-awaited place. Special thanks go to Superintendent Architect Cecilia Carlorosi for the will shown in giving the site back to Ancona.

Giovanni Seneca – Artistic director of the Festiva Adriatico Mediterraneo

Certainly the reopening of the Roman amphitheater, which had been closed for twelve years, is an epochal event for Ancona. A very beautiful space returns to the city and this makes us happy. The 2024 edition of Adriatico Mediterraneo will focus on Greece. As always, national and international artists will participate. The program will be presented with a specific press conference, in which the events that will take place at the Roman Amphitheater from 26 to 29 August will be illustrated.

Gilberto Santini – Director of AMAT

The impossibility of using the Roman amphitheater was an incomprehensible wound for thirteen years, because that was the place where the United Ancient Theaters (which have been crossing the Marche for more than twenty years and uniting the sense of history in an ideal itinerary in various cities) proposed themselves in Ancona. The city was not included in the Tau program for thirteen years. I therefore applaud Mayor Silvetti and Councilor Bertini, because they achieved the result with tenacity. This summer we are bringing two works with big names to this largest theater in the Tau.

Evio Hermas Ercoli – President of the Popsophia Association

Bringing Popsophia to the amphitheater is an exciting challenge. First of all it is organisational, because it is about returning an amphitheatre, an important place, to the city and to entertainment. It is then a question of transforming not only the hospitality of the place but, organizationally, also the destination, with a show of a certain type, in that place. Naturally, the equally challenging part is the cultural one, in a sacred and symbolic context like this, in the only city in the Marche where the sun rises and sets over the sea and makes the Roman amphitheater fascinating.

Massimo Tarabelli – Honorary President of Spazio Musica, the organizing association of Ancona Jazz

Ancona Jazz arrives at the amphitheater since July 16th with Sergio Cammariere’s quartet, for the first time in Ancona, with the great cellist Giovanna Fabulari. It will therefore be a very important opportunity to listen to him again in an environment such as the amphitheatre. On July 19th we present Rossana Casale, with a completely new project. Her album was released in May, it’s called Almost Blue, with a repertoire that also includes instrumental songs. We close on July 26th with Paolo Fresu, a trumpeter that Ancona Jazz often hosts, with incredible versatility. He will be together with Rita Marcotulli, a great exponent of Italian jazz.
