Pisa, 14 June 2024 – Monday 17 June returns, on the day of the patron saint of the city of Pisa, the Palio of San Ranieri, the challenge in the Arno between the four boats representing the historic districts of the city: San Francesco (yellow boat), San Martino (red boat), Santa Maria (sky blue boat) and Sant’Antonio (green boat). The competition will start at 7pm with the boats competing for 1,500 meters against the current from the Cittadella bridge, at the headquarters of the Arno rowers, until arriving at the Scalo dei Renaioli. The race will be preceded at 6pm by historical river parade with 4 boats and the presence of 20 participants which accompany the altarpiece of the Saint. In the afternoon, before the river parade, the second edition will take place the Pisa Naval League Trophy which will be held over a distance of 500 metres, in the stretch of the city’s Arno between Ponte di Mezzo and Ponte della Fortezza from 2.30pm to 5pm. The zonal sprint race, valid for the national ranking and reserved for male and female crews of the cadet categories, students, children, juniors and seniors on Elba – Jole boats, is organized by the Italian Fixed Seat Rowing Federation together with the ASD Billi of Pisa and with the collaboration of Lega Navale Pisa and the Italian Federation of Aquatic Rescue. The Palio of San Ranieri is an event of historical re-enactment which is part of the Traditions of the history and identity of Pisa. The municipal administration organizes on 17 June, on the occasion of the Feast of the Patron Saint Ranieri, a rowing Palio which takes place on the waters of the Arno between four boats, which refer to the ancient “Stefanian galleys”, frigates of the Order of the Knights of Saint Stephen. The historical re-enactment has its origins in the Palio in honor of the Patron Saint conceived and promoted in 1935 by the local ENAL section. The re-enactment event takes place chronologically in the 16th century, in the period of Battle of Lepanto on 7 October 1571. The race is held in the Arno on a course of 1,500 metres, against the current, from the boats combined with the four historic districts of the city, as defined in the 1930s: San Francesco with the yellow colour, San Martino with the red, Santa Maria with the light blue and Sant’Antonio with the green. The program. The river procession which will arrive around Scalo Renaioli is scheduled to depart from the Cittadella Bridge at 6pm: here the disembarkation of the participants is expected, with the transfer of some of them onto the boarding boat. At 6.30 pm the draw for the waterways and at 7 pm the start of the competition. Finally, at 7.30 pm, at the Scalo dei Renaioli, the Palio delivery ceremony. The crews. Each “frigate” is made up of eight rowers, the helmsman and the fitter. At the finish line, the latter has the task of climbing one of the 4 ropes that reach the top of a 10 meter high flagpole and grabbing the blue palio, symbol of victory. Two (symbolic) ducks, however, represent the little coveted recognition for the last classified. This particular way of awarding victory is inspired to the Lepanto company when the Christian troops, once they boarded the Turkish flagship, they took possession of the fighting flame placed on the flagpole of the Saracen vessel. Changes to traffic for the Palio of San Ranieri. To allow the event to take place on Monday, the following changes to traffic are planned: from 5pm to 10pm on Monday 17 June: Ponte della Fortezza, north-south direction lane: closed to vehicular traffic. Lungarno Galilei, stretch between the Fortezza Bridge and Vicolo Lanfranchi: closed to vehicular transit; parking ban with forced removal except organization vehicles; suppression of the cycle path and ban on pedestrian transit on the pavement due to the positioning of stands. Via Bovio: establishment of an access ban on Lungarno Galilei; establishment of the alternating one-way system with right of way according to the direction normally in force, at low speed and adopting all the necessary precautions. Largo del Parlascio, west side (monument): establishment of a ban on pedestrian transit on the sidewalk affected by the erection of a sales structure; From 5am to 10pm: Piazza San Sepolcro, part facing Lungarno Galilei: establishment of the parking ban with forced removal, to allow the positioning of the sales structures; temporary abolition of parking spaces reserved for vehicles serving disabled people and moving them in the immediate vicinity. Piazza Solferino, former Palazzo Enel side: establishment of a parking ban with forced removal, to allow the positioning of sales structures; the east side travel lane, south/north direction, of the Fortezza bridge, i.e. the one that leads from Lungarno Fibonacci to Lungarno Buozzi, will be left open to normal traffic. The Tuscan Bus Lines will divert their urban lines informing users at stops and terminus. Changes to the road system for the San Ranieri Fair. For the feast of the Patron Saint, San Ranieri, an appointment with the traditional fair which takes place throughout the day on Monday 17 June on the stretch of via Dini, via Corsica and piazza dei Cavalieri, with subsequent changes to vehicular traffic in the aforementioned streets and surrounding areas at the fair. From 6am to 10pm, the following will be adopted temporary traffic and parking measures: Piazza dei Cavalieri: closed to vehicular transit, with the exception of vehicles owned by participants in the Fair, for the transport of structures necessary for sales and emergency vehicles.
Via Dini, from Piazza dei Cavalieri to Piazzetta Vallerini: parking ban with forced removal and closed to vehicular transit with the exception of vehicles owned by fair participants for the transport of structures necessary for sales and emergency vehicles. Via Consoli del Mare: establishment of one-way traffic alternating with sight right of way according to the direction of travel normally in force, at low speed and taking all the necessary precautions, in order to allow residents and authorized persons to exit onto Via Canto del Nicchio; Via Dalmazia, Arco del Gualandi section: establishment of a transit ban. Via San Frediano: theestablishment of the transit ban And establishment of alternating one-way traffic with right of way according to the direction of travel normally in force, at low speed and taking all the necessary precautions, in order to allow residents and authorized people to exit onto Via Tavoleria. Via Oberdan: suspension of the pedestrian area for the entire duration of the event by keeping the “pilomat” in the lowered position.
