Greener deliveries in the historic center of Faenza

Reduction of PM10 e traffic reduction in the city they are at the center of a project implemented by the Union of Romagna Faentina.

“Pilot project on the process of transforming goods logistics of the Union of Romagna Faentina”, financed by the Emilia-Romagna Region, is the title of the initiative which aims reduce air pollution, noise pollution and energy consumption and, at the same time, tends to reduce vehicular traffic volumes to the benefit of a better liveability of the city.

From this perspective it therefore becomes a priority protect the quality of life and the environment in citiespursuing objectives of rationalisation, optimization and efficiency in the distribution of goods from commercial activities.

Starting from gradual expansion of limited traffic zonesforeseen by the Urban Sustainable Mobility Plan (PUMS) among the measures of the latter there is also the rewriting some rules, in particular those relating to access to the central areas of the city by commercial vehicles encouraging the use of electric or sustainable mobility compared to traditional vehicles powered by thermal engines.

The Municipality of Faenza wants to create local logistics spaces where commercial vehicles entrust the delivery to operators who cover the last stretch with bicycles or ecological vehicles

In this regard, the Municipality of Faenza has planned the creation of proximity logistics spacesmore briefly ‘SLP’: areas or structures, identified in central areas of the city, where commercial vehicles entrust the delivery to operators who travel the last stretch (called ‘last mile’ or even ‘last mile’) of transport through the use of ecological vehicles or bicycles and cargo bikesthus avoiding the entry into historic centers of vehicles used by suppliers.

As the first action of the Project, from Monday 17 June, on an experimental level for about a month, a ‘goods breaking centre’, a micro-hub, will be operational, located in rooms on the ground floor in the Faventia Sales complex where, during the day, the goods will be stored, awaiting delivery in the commercial establishments located in the testing area.

Technical partner of the project will be the freight transport company GLS And the commercial establishments involved will be those within the walls of the historic center.

The project, carried out in collaboration with important regional partners, Clust-ER Build, Clust-ER Innovate, ConAmi, Fondazione ITL, Faventia Sales and the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering of the University of Bologna, is fits within the scenario of reorganization and optimization of flows for the delivery of goods in the territory of the Union.

At the end of the experimentation they will be elaborated best practice and any regulatory proposals to make the delivery of goods easier in what is commonly defined as the ‘last mile’, through ecological vehicles or the use of bicycles and cargo bikes and it will be verified whether the conditions exist, and what are the conditions for the applicability in the future in the historic center of the municipality of Faenza of this delivery method and for the replicability in other municipalities of the Union, in particular in that of Solarolo and Castel Bolognese given their location in flat areas.

The results of the project will be presented in a conference which will be organized within the European Sustainable Mobility Week in one day in September.

Luca Ortolani (Ass. Environment and Mobility): “We want to reduce traffic and emissions in the heart of the city. The historic center is a precious and delicate environment”

The Old Town of Faenza – points out Luca Ortolanicouncilor of the Municipality of Faenza with responsibility for the Environment and Mobility – and the heart of the citya precious and delicate urban area that represents the identity for many Faenza residents. Regulating a new mobility for goods in the historic center, more gentle, ecological and respectful of the central context, is an opportunity that we want to study with this experimentation, thanks to the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the many qualified partners.

The project promises to drastically reduce emissions and traffic in the historic center, also representing an opportunity for new work with positive social impacts.”

Manuela Rontini (ER regional council): “The fruitful collaboration between Emilia-Romagna and Faenza continues, with a project that aims to improve the quality of air and life”

With this project – explains the regional councilor Manuela Rontinipresident of the Economic Policies Commission of the Region – continues fruitful collaboration between Emilia-Romagna and Faenzawith the Municipality which, also on this occasion, was ready by nominating a quality project under regional tenderwith the aim of continuing to experiment with solutions that allow us to improve the air quality of our city and the well-being of citizens”.
