Metro M5, green light for extension

In the last meeting of the Cinisello Balsamo municipal council on 11 June, the proposal to extend the M5 Milan metro line to Monza was approved, also involving the municipalities of Sesto San Giovanni and Milan. This extension includes four new stops: Testi-Gorky, Rondinella-Crocetta, Lincoln and Bettola, the latter with interchange with the M1 line.

Metro M5, the project

The project, entirely underground, aims to bring the subway into the heart of the area, as declared by an official note from the municipality of Cinisello Balsamo. This formal step is crucial to advance the long process of creating the M5, which has been awaited for several years.

Metro M5, approval

The approval also included the adaptation of the municipal urban planning and the obtaining of authorization from the Lombardy region through the Paur procedure, together with the single regional approval which provides all the necessary green lights to proceed with construction. With the completion of these bureaucratic steps and the positive opinion of the services conference, we have reached the final phase before starting the contract.

Metro M5, statements

Mayor Giacomo Ghilardi commented positively on this evolution, underlining the strategic importance of the arrival of the M5 in Cinisello Balsamo and the need to resolve the problems that a work of this magnitude could cause in the area. The introduction of the Lincoln stop represents a crucial point in the project, acting as an urban gateway that improves the accessibility of the territory both at a local and supra-municipal level.

Not just Metro M5

At the same time, the project continues Milan Red Metro towards the western districts of Baggio, with the start of works scheduled for 2025. This 3.3 km extension will include the Parri-Valsesia, Baggio and Olmi stops, with a total investment of over 433 million euros and a duration of work estimated at 5 and a half years.
