Vaccari news – Today it’s the turn of the Tower of Pisa

Daily stamp: it is the turn of the famous Tuscan monument, already mentioned, for example, in the 50 lire of 8 October 1973

The additional cancellation, in use tomorrow

There are quite a few postal tributes which, in a more or less evident way, mention the Tower of Pisa. One of which, the 50 Italian lire of 8 October 1973, was expressly dedicated to the monument, even if it lacked any anniversary (“The unexpected stamp” – wrote Enzo Diena in “Il collector” of the following 3 November – “does not undoubtedly marked a step forward neither in terms of the aesthetic success of Italian stamps, nor in that of an organic planning of their issue”). Exactly like the tooth that arrived today.

It is a “Bzona1” for 1.30 euros, useful with a postcard or an ordinary letter in the twenty grams to Europe or the Mediterranean. Thanks to Maria Carmela Perrini, she depicts it in an unusual way, that is, without the crowd of tourists in constant siege (will they be looking for the value card to stamp the ritual greetings?). It belongs to the series “The Italian artistic and cultural heritage” and was printed in three hundred thousand and fifteen self-adhesive copies organized in sheets of forty-five. The cancellation is at Pisa Centro; this post office is located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II 8. A second stamp will be used tomorrow at the Sinopie Museum, in Piazza dei Miracoli snc, from 9am to 7pm.

Symbol of human genius

It is “one of the most famous monuments in the world, itself a symbol of human genius and its ability to adapt to the most complex challenges”, notes the president of the Pisan Primate Opera, Andrea Maestrelli, in the associated bulletin.

The bell tower of the Cathedral, whose construction began in 1173, soon began to lean. Already in 1179, the creator himself, Bonanno Pisano, stopped the construction site because the underlying ground had begun to give way. However, a century later, the stubbornness of those specialists meant that Giovanni di Simone, who took over the management of the factories, put his hand back into it. The project was completed in the mid-14th century with the belfry of Tommaso Pisano.

“Finally, thanks to the seven bells that top it, the «Tower» could begin its role”, marking the liturgical day and, at the same time, becoming the backdrop to historical events such as Galileo Galilei’s experiments on falling bodies.
