Kurdish activist in prison after arrest in Crotone, councilor Laghi visits her: “I am worried about her conditions”

“Maysoon Majidi, the Iranian Kurdish activist detained in the Castrovillari prison on charges of being a smuggler, is increasingly proven”. This was stated in a note by regional councilor Ferdinando Laghi who returned to visit the Iranian activist in prison after being arrested five months ago by the Crotone Financial Police on charges of being a smuggler. The investigating judge of the Court of Crotone has ordered the immediate trial of the Kurdish-Iranian activist for July 24, accepting the request of the deputy prosecutor of Crotone Rosaria Multari.

“I went to see her – adds Laghi, who is a doctor – both to evaluate her health conditions, after finding her very tired last time, on the occasion of the hunger strike and despite the excellent treatment given to her in prison, and as a representative of the institutions in light of the next hearing with immediate judgment which will be held on July 24th and which will mark the start of the actual trial for Majidi”.
The woman has always claimed her innocence also because, according to the interviews collected immediately after the landing, only two migrants out of 77 accused her. Witnesses who were not able to be heard in the evidentiary hearing, arranged a good 5 months after the arrest.
A very long time during which the woman remained in custody but above all the witnesses, who in the meantime had claimed that their statements had not been translated well and who had never accused the woman, left Italy.
Curiously, the two – who have a residence permit and are in England and Germany, were defined as untraceable by the Financial Police despite being in state reception centres. In fact, the two witnesses were tracked down without difficulty by both Le Iene journalists and Maysoon’s defense lawyer. Strange that only the Court, the Prosecutor’s Office and the Crotone judicial police did not succeed.

“Maysoon has difficulty eating – underlines Laghi – just think that she now only weighs 39 kilos but what worries me most is the state of anxiety and depression in which she finds herself. The young woman, in fact, does not realize why she is subjected to the prison regime, considering that she was fleeing from a repressive regime that threatened her, her freedom and her very life”.
There were also moments of emotion during the interview because detention is really affecting her and Maysoon said that on August 4th it will be a year that she has been without a home. Maysoon also showed Laghi some notes and drawings on the topic of detention which are, said the regional councilor, “sadly beautiful”.
“This girl, of Kurdish ethnicity – concludes Laghi – human rights activist in Iran, journalist and director – adds the regional councilor – continues to ask herself why she now finds herself accused of a terrible and infamous crime, an accusation, that of being a ‘smuggler’, who does not fit well with the principles that have always inspired her life and that forced her to flee; escape made possible by the large sums of money paid by her family, to allow her and her brother, now in Germany, a safer and better life. Certainly a story full of dark sides, which require to be – and certainly will be – adequately investigated and evaluated in order to achieve just, speedy and humane justice”.
