REGGIO EMILIA – Today is World Blood Donor Day. The opportunity to thank those who choose to take care of others with a gesture that has become increasingly important, but also to remember that the need for blood does not go on holiday and it is essential to donate even in summer.
The 17,000 people of Reggio are well aware of this and in 2023 their gesture made it possible to collect 20,499 units of whole blood, 491 less than the previous year. A figure which, however, must be read in light of the new regional plan which asked Avis for a greater commitment in apheresis collections, those relating to plasma and platelets, which in the 38 Avis sections active in the Reggio Emilia area last year amounted to 9824, the 4.36% more than in 2022. He spoke this morning on Buongiorno Reggio about the importance of donating plasma, Alberto Carrettiprovincial president of Avis.
Apheresis donations further increased in the first 5 months of this year, 3,986, while whole blood donations continued to decline. At the moment 8,588, just over two hundred less than the previous year. This is because the balance between the units collected and those transfused is positive. Thanks to the generosity of the people of Reggio Emilia and the resumption of donations after Covid.
