LECCE – The Tree and Urban Green Coordination of Lecce reports a new felling of trees in Viale De Pietro, by Lupiae Servizi, which took place yesterday. It is an Aleppo pine located near the Calasso school which, according to the workers found on site, to whom we asked for explanations, was guilty of being close to a light pole and compressing it. Technical reasons, therefore, behind the felling, no danger to people or disease of the plant: a healthy tree.

At the official meetings that took place in recent months between Tree Coordination and Urban Greenery with technicians and RUPs of the redevelopment projects of ring roads and historic avenues, with the aim of evaluating the possibility of maintaining healthy trees that would have been eliminated ‘solely for technical reasons’, not There followed no official communication on the decisions taken. Furthermore, yesterday’s felling took place in violation of the legislation for the protection of avifauna, which prohibits felling and pruning from March to the end of August, therefore as the tree was included in a project in the executive phase, which did NOT provide for its removal, only a reason of public safety can justify its sudden elimination, before the start of the construction site and without prior communication to the citizens.
Yet the situation was well known, as can be seen from the sequence of images obtained from Google Maps.
There is bitterness over yet another tree stand hastily sacrificed for non-essential needs and great is the uncertainty that hangs over all the trees in the city which, in the absence of a complete green regulation, are eliminated for the most diverse reasons, almost never essential.
As a citizen and association Coordination, we want to ask whoever, once the count and recount and possible ballot are finished, will inaugurate a new administration of the city MORATORIUM on the felling of healthy trees for reasons other than danger to humans and we ask this because today, the real danger lies in depriving citizens of healthy and mature trees capable of absorbing pollutants and lowering scorching summer temperatures”.
