Varese and decay, cypresses arrive in Piazza Repubblica: will they be enough?

Work begins in Varese in the gardens next to the war memorial. They will be named after the Financial Police. But bivouacs and shops are unlikely to decline without a fixed presence of the police.

This morning, Friday 14 June, excavators and workers went into action in the gardens next to the War Memorial in Piazza Repubblica. The works involve the planting of ten cypresses: six on the right side of the monument, where the damaged Himalayan cedars were cut down, two on the left side and another two towards the square. The construction site will lead to the creation of a small garden which will subsequently be named after the Guardia di Finanza.

The choice of essences to plant fell on pomegranates, a symbol of death and rebirth; the path below the monument will instead be surrounded by strawberry trees. Also present on site are public green technicians and video surveillance project workers.

The area has been the subject of controversy for years due to bivouacs, abandoned bottles and daily drug dealing, of which the police are clearly aware and which they are struggling to contain. This intervention aims to redevelop the space and eliminate the degradation that characterized it. The doubt remains that, without a fixed presence of the police and carabinieri (the garrison is rarely used, ed.), this intervention will hardly prove to be anything more than a simple make-up operation.
