L’Flag-wavers Association of Arezzo will be present atItalian Festival Of Cape Town, annual event that promotes and celebrates Italian traditions, which will take place on 2 and 3 March. This was announced by the Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria, promoter of the initiative together with the Italian Consulate in Cape Town and the association Idiom Wines. Through a food and wine tour, which mixes the best of the Italian wine tradition, street food, cooking masterclasses, musical events and entertainment, theItalian Festival at Idiom Wines it will be an opportunity to bring Italy and South Africa further closer.
Flag-wavers have been a key figure in medieval military strategies for centuries. Making use of a very precise code of launching and waving of the banners, they communicated to their allies the most favorable moment for the attack, the movements to be carried out with the troops and the salient phases of the battle. As time passed, their role took on more and more artistic depth, becoming an integral part of folklore and popular entertainment.
Born in 1960, theFlag-wavers Association of Arezzo is an autonomous organization that has made this art its vocation, aiming to remain faithful to the military tradition but without forgetting the artistic and choreographic aspect. Carrying on their tradition, the Flag Throwers of Arezzo take part in various cultural, recreational and folkloristic events in Italy and around the world throughout the year. At the moment the Association has a staff of around 60 standard bearers and 30 instruments, and has more than 1700 performances to its credit.
