Armored and sunny Brindisi experiences a day of contrasts on the day of the leaders’ dinner G7 to the Swabian Castle.
On the one hand, the enthusiasm of many residents for the attention brought to the city and the opportunity for development. On the other, the voices of dissent of those who contest the policies of the great and take to the streets for peace.
A few dozen people, including peace and environmental activists, gathered in the square to protest against the “war policies” discussed at the summit. Among the slogans “no to the third world war”. The protesters then had dinner together, consuming typical Apulian products.
Bobo Aprile, spokesperson of coordination No G7 Puglia, points the finger at the «50 billion euros» which, according to him, will be given to Zelensky for the war in Ukraine.
«We trust in the Pope’s presence to tone down the tone and give voice to broader opposition», he declares.
Among the issues at the center of the protests, climate crisis, human rights violations (with particular reference to Palestine and Kurdistan) e immigration management. Protesters are calling on G7 leaders to act for a more just and sustainable world.

The American president Joe Biden does not participate at the dinner hosted by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarellawelcomed warmly by the people of Brindisi who ask to «don’t forget Puglia and its people».
An impressive deployment of police forces patrols the city, especially around the Swabian Castle. Deserted city and surprised tourists
Some tourists, unaware of the summit, found themselves among the security measures and at demonstrations. “We thought it was another move by Putin,” jokes a Londoner amazed by the presence of helicopters and closed shops.
The G7 brings with it visibility and opportunities, but also division and worries. The Apulian city is at the center of a global stage, with lights and shadows that tell its complex reality.
