proceeds to the families of the victims

A book to tell one of the most painful episodes that occurred in Tuscany in recent years. And which saw a good part of its procedural process take place at the court of Florence with the Region acting as a civil party. “A very unpleasant episode”, published by L’Ancora and whose proceeds will go entirely to the families of the victims, is a book in which the two authors, the journalists Giovanni Lorenzini and Francesco Bertolucci, start from the story of the same evening of the Viareggio train accident on 29 June 2009 – in which 32 people lost their lives – and then retrace the following days, the investigations and the entire procedural process, coming to make a point on current and future European and Italian railway safety as well as explaining the impact that the trial it has had and will have on Italian justice.

It will be presented on June 14th in Viareggio at 6.30 pm at the Libreria Lungomare, in the presence of the transport councilor of the Tuscany region Stefano Baccelli and the families of the victims gathered in the association Il Mondo che Diritti.

A book that, despite what one might think, talks about a decidedly current topic: railway safety.

Yes, because between now and 2030, rail freight transport is destined to practically double throughout Europe in the name of the green transition. The number of trains that will transport dangerous substances such as petroleum derivatives, chemical products, nuclear waste and so on, will increase dramatically and safety – from what emerges in the book – still seems not to be impeccable.

The book also contains testimonies from family members and people directly involved, as well as the story of a trial which saw the convictions of the defendants confirmed but which has yet to establish – based on a recalculation of the sentences – how much justice they will have to pay.

“A very unpleasant episode” can be purchased, at a cost of 12 euros in paper format and 6 in digital, in the Mondadori, Feltrinelli, Libreria Universitaria and Amazon stores.
