LECCE – Best wishes, Giacinto Urso. Prominent figure in Italian political and institutional life with the Christian Democrats, ombudsman emeritus of the Province of Lecce since 2009, the University of Salento wishes him special wishes for turning 99 today, 12 June 2024. Urso was among the founders of the University of Lecce. He ran in 1955.
The Honorable Urso, the University recalls, represents a fundamental point of reference for the Salento community: he was a member of parliament for five legislatures (from 1963 to 1983), undersecretary of public education twice (from 1974 to 1976 and from 1978 to 1983) and president of the Province of Lecce from 1985 to 1990.
“We wish a happy birthday to the Honorable Giacinto Urso, an extraordinary political and intellectual personality from the Salento area,” declared the rector Fabio Pollice. “The life of the Honorable Urso spanned the last century of Italian history, which saw him hold demanding and prestigious positions through which he honored his land and his country”.
“We are grateful to him for many reasons – he continues –, the most important of which for us was having participated in the foundation of the University of Lecce in 1955. The first nucleus of what later became the University of Salento was a a feat that is also due to his dedication and conviction. We will be proud to have him by our side once again in 2025, when the University of Salento will celebrate its 70 years of activity”.
